IN HOUSE CIVIL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

A game changer for your project

Most residential firms in New England coordinate engineering through outside consultants. Longfellow does not. Our structural and civil engineers work in-house, alongside the architects and designers they support. That changes what's possible — for the design, the site, and the client.

Engineering Hero

Longfellow brings architecture, engineering, and residential construction expertise together under one roof.

Engineering that solves problems & opens up design possibility

When a structural engineer sits in the same office as the architect, decisions happen in real time. Problems get solved and the design's feasibility is known from the beginning. We do our most important work on two fronts: ambitious designs that push past conventional limits, and difficult sites that need engineering before design can begin.

Civil Engineering

  • Grading and drainage design
  • Stormwater management
  • Septic system design
  • Wetlands delineation
  • Conservation Commission filings
  • Cape Cod Commission submittals
  • Retaining wall and slope stability
  • Driveway design on steep grades
  • Coastal resiliency and floodplain analysis
  • FEMA flood elevation compliance
  • Historic District Commission documentation
  • Utility and infrastructure routing
  • Erosion control planning

Structural Engineering

  • Structural assessment for renovations
  • Load-bearing wall removal
  • Lally post removal
  • Steel, concrete, and wood beam analysis
  • Foundation design
  • Framing plans and details
  • Flood zone pile and pier foundations
  • Open floor plan structural solutions
  • Cathedral and coffered ceiling engineering
  • Cantilevered floors and terraces
  • Roof snow load and drift analysis
  • Hurricane zone wind analysis
  • Elevator Installations
  • Historic Preservation
  • Masonry restoration and preservation

Custom wall of windows in a Longfellow home — engineered structural frame concealed within

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

Wall of Windows

A wall of windows can't carry the loads that a solid wall would. To make the openings work, our engineers designed a concealed structural frame around it. Engineered wood and steel beams transfer roof and floor loads around the openings, while steel moment frames provide lateral stiffness to protect the glazing systems and brace the house against hurricane force winds. The combination of steel and wood framing systems work together to create a sturdy but cost-effective way to achieve a clients goals. The glass creates the view, but the structural frame makes it possible.

Built-In Oversight

Our architects and engineers make regular site visits throughout construction — not just at milestones. Project managers have a direct line to the people who designed the details, so when field conditions don't match the drawings or a subcontractor needs clarity on a connection, the answer comes quickly from someone who knows the project.
